In the past few weeks, I’ve had a couple of big wake-up calls with regards to my how much weight I gained over the past year. The first came at a Rotary meeting while I was standing in line at the buffet.
I’m super awkward when it comes to networking, so I joined Rotary as a way to step out of my comfort zone. A slim, attractive girl about my age approached me with a smile. She had that look in her eye that said she wanted to start a conversation. I smiled and said hello. She smiled back, introduced herself, then leaned over conspiratorially and whispered in my ear, “So when is the baby due?”
I laughed it off as best I could, then sat down next to her and tried to make pleasant conversation. Before I even left the parking garage from the meeting, I had signed up for a full month of yoga classes.
Then last Saturday, my husband graciously took the children for the morning so I could attend my first ever “hot yoga” session. I used to practice yoga 4-5 times a week, so I figured I would be just fine.
Long story short: I wasn’t fine. It was evident that I had not done yoga since I found out I was pregnant with triplets over 4 years ago. I had to take 3-4 breaks and felt like I was going to pass out nearly the whole time, but I hung in there.
After class ended, I stood out in the hallway drying off my dripping, sweaty body, when an older gentleman from the class struck up a conversation.
“First class, eh?”
“Yeah. I couldn’t believe how tough it was.”
“Just so you know, you were in the hottest spot in the room. Next time you come, try moving a little closer to the door. It will help a lot.”
“Thank you for the advice. I’ll remember that.”
“You did well, though. Better than most first-timers. I can tell you’ve done a lot of yoga. You’re very flexible for a girl your size.”
A girl your size.
The words hung in the air for a moment before I said goodbye and politely excused myself.
In my last post, I mentioned that 2016 was a very stagnant year for me. That’s true for most things. However, with fitness I did a total backslide.
At the end of 2015, I was starting to get back into fitness and completed the 21-Day Fix a couple of times. I was so excited that I posted my results on the blog.
Not bad progress, huh? Then January arrived. I began working full time again and gradually started coming up with excuses about why I couldn’t work out right now. I had every intention of getting back to it as soon as I got my life back into a comfortable routine.
You know what happened? I got into a very comfortable routine NOT working out or eating well. And very slowly, over the course of the year, I gained the weight back. Every. Last. Pound. (All 15 of them.)
I sit here, freshly showered after my third yoga class of the year, ready to recommit. I have signed up for a challenge group and will begin 21-Day Fix on Monday. I’ll be documenting the journey with the Instagram handle @tripletmomgetsfit if you would like to follow along or offer moral support. I will share my results again at the end of the challenge. Expect another fitness post on January 31st. Wish me luck!
